Contiki Day 3 Kakadu National Park:

Day 3 Kakadu National Park Friday 1st September 2017:

This morning after a goodnight sleep we made our way to the restaurant at 8:30 am for our included breakfast.

At 9:15 am we boarded the coach for our second day exploring Kakadu National Park.

As we made our way towards our first stop of the day our Trip Manager Mark explained our itinerary for the day which included: Seeing some aboriginal rock paintings, hiking to Nourlangie Rock, having a lunch stop at an outback roadhouse and hiking to Ubirr Rock, before returning back to our accommodation and having a free night to mingle with our fellow travellers.

We arrived at our first stop of the day Nourlangie Rock Art Site at 10:30 am.

As Mark guided us through the Rock Art Site,we saw some amazing Aboriginal paintings on rock faces.

It’s very interesting that all the aboriginal art doesn’t fade or wash away during the wet season when Kakadu experiences flooding rains.

After learning all about the history about the Nourlangie Rock Art Site we took a challenging hike up to the top of Nourlangie Rock.

Which is the best place to can see an amazing panoramic view of Kakadu National Park!

As it was such an amazing landscape we decided to do a group photo with the Nourlangie Rock as a stunning backdrop for our photo.

After taking lots of great photos at Nourlangie Rock we hiked back down and boarded the coach before making our way back on the road.

On our way to our lunch stop we rehydrated as it was topping 36 degrees by the time we had finished our hike!

After a 2 hour drive we arrived at our lunch stop at 1pm.

Which was another outback roadhouse with a restaurant and even had a pool!

At 1:45 pm after our lunch stop we made our way towards our next stop of the day at Ubirr Rock.

We arrived at Ubirr Rock at 3:30 pm.

Before hiking up to the Ubirr Rock lookout, Mark went around the group and made sure we had plenty of water and explained to stay on the track as thats the safest way to make it to the top of Ubirr Rock.

As we hiked our way up Ubirr Rock we came across some more amazing aboriginal artwork which Mark explained that aboriginals painted to warn fellow aboriginals to beware of crocodiles.

The hike up Ubirr Rock was quite a challenging hike due to the steepness of the track and the 38 degrees temperatures but the view up the top is such an amazing breathtaking view of the floodplains it is definitely worth it!

This is a great place to take some panoramic views of the floodplains as you can see for kilometres in the distance with the sheer rocks faces in the background make an amazing photo.

As the afternoon heat was baring down we decided to hike back down Ubirr Rock.

When we had arrived back the coach Mark let us have a 20 minute rest and rehydrate break recover from such a challenging hike in the heat.

At 4:45 pm we boarded the coach and had a short drive back to our accommodation.

We arrived back at to our accommodation at 5:45 pm.

The whole group decided to cool off in the pool after such a long, hot and exhausting day of hiking Nourlangie and Ubirr Rock.

After spending time cooling off in the pool the everyone made our way to the restaurant at 7pm.

We purchased dinner and spent more time sharing travel experiences and learning how our different cultures are so differ from each other.

After dinner most of the group went to bed to rest and relax after a long day of hiking and exploring.

While a small group of people had a few drinks, and played some card games before heading to bed to be rested for another long day of travelling through the outback towards Katherine tomorrow.

Safe Travels!

Campbell 🙂
